Anthem

The following is a poem that I wrote published in the Adelaide Literary Award Anthology 2020: Poetry. The title of this poem is “Anthem.”

I long to sing a new song,
One free from doubt and care,
A song you’d never understand.
How can I sing, when all is wrong,
When people give a haughty stare,
And few will dare to take a stand?
Could you know where I belong
Among the ones I love who tear
My people down with tooth and hand?
How can I sing? And yet my song
Will be the same for every scare:
I AM is sovereign over this land.
